Nick Davidson
In 2011 Nick Davidson, a Captain for British Airways and former Surrey & Kent Flying Club Instructor, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was his wish to leave a small legacy. He asked his wife Alina, and close friend Gary Merchant if they would run one flying scholarship in the form of a Private Pilots Licence. (PPL)
In 2013, The Nick Davidson Memorial Flying Scholarship was set up with support from Biggin Hill Airport Ltd and Falcon Flying Services who owned the Surrey and Kent Flying Club. From 50 applications, 15 were interviewed and 3 made it to the final stage. The winner, John Harrison completed his PPL at Surrey and Kent Flying Club.
In 2014 Alina Davidson decided that she wanted to run another scholarship, it was agreed that a second scholarship with the the same support and in the same format could be run, from 55 applications 15 were interviewed and 4 shortlisted. The deserving winner, Steven Inch completed his PPL at Surrey and Kent Flying Club at Biggin Hill.
At the beginning of 2016 Alina Davidson informed Gary Merchant that she wished the scholarship to continue into the future. It was clear that it was time to set up a charity. This was completed during the winter of 2016/17 along with choosing another scholar for 2017.
